Biographical Note

Horace Fildes was a Post Office official, rising to Assistant Postmaster of Wellington before his retirement in 1929. His mother was the daughter of J.J. Taine, a merchant in Wellington from 1840, and Leocadia di Oliviera, adopted daughter of E.G. Wakefield. Fildes was keenly interested in those aspects of New Zealand history most clearly connected with early settlement, particularly the influence of Wakefield. He collected books and corresponded with writers on New Zealand history and related topics.

Mr Fildes bequeathed his books and papers to the University Library, where they were accessioned in late 1938.

Arrangement has had to take account of several previous systems, some of which were imposed by Library staff.

Fildes numbered his books sequentially, including manuscripts and scrapbooks. These have been catalogued with the same number e.g. callmark Fildes 373.

A suffix 'MSS' was added for unpublished manuscripts and they are now shelved separately, e.g. Fildes 1 MSS.

Fildes did not number his pamphlets; he listed these in a separate shelflist. Fildes' pamphlets were catalogued into the Library's overall New Zealand pamphlet sequence, which have callmarks composed as follows: DU401/decade/box and running number.

Fildes papers were given a box listing.

There were several unlisted boxes, including indexes, clippings, and papers; these are being re-processed in 2008.

Fildes was a keen indexer for over forty years, both of his own scrapbooks, of documents which he transcribed, and of published material in his library which did not have an index. His correspondence indicates that he frequently used these indexes to locate and share information for other researchers.

The indexes are usually in hard or softcover notebooks.

Four of these index volumes, titled 'Europeans', 'Maoris', Ships', and 'Places', were published by the VUW Library in 1984, as 'Selective Indexes to Certain Books relating to Early New Zealand; compiled by H.E.M. Fildes, ca.1920 to 1937, and now transcribed by the Victoria University of Wellington Library'. These Fildes index-books record references in some 800 publications to over 900 Europeans, over 400 Māori, over 500 ships and over 700 places, structures and institutions, from the time of Tasman to about 1880. Photo-printed, soft cover, 144 pages. $19.25

It should be noted that although this publication describes the 'European' volume as titled 'White people', this title is not in Fildes' handwriting and is likely to have been added after his death.

This series documents all the notebooks which contain indexes. The numbers and titles printed on the front covers do not appear to be in Fildes' handwriting, and may have been added by a relative or by Library staff.

This series consists of guardbooks, into which Fildes had attached items which he considered of historical value. These consist chiefly of original items, and include original art works, engravings, photographs, correspondence and collected autographs which occur on pieces of correspondence, maps, postcards, transcriptions, facsimiles and copies of historical documents, drafts, ephemera, and clippings. Many items carry extensive annotation by Fildes. The pages were numbered by Fildes, and all except volume 2 were then indexed from A-Z at the front of the book. The indexes are by name and include persons, places, ships, monuments, etc, although there are occasional subject headings such as 'New Zealand Flag' (in Portfolio no. 5). Indexing appears to have been completed for Portfolio 1 only; items laid in to other volumes may not appear in the indexes.

These volumes appear to complement the series of Index volumes which Fildes compiled for published works, four of which were transcribed and published by the Library in 1984.

Portfolio index entries were included in the card catalogue 'Fildes Correspondents', which is available in the J C Beaglehole Room.

People of Maori descent should note that all these portfolios contain representations of tipuna, including moko and mokomokai.

A biographical study, subtitled 'Alfred Domett, C.M.G. , called 'Waring' by his friend Robert Browning'. Domett arrived in Nelson in 1842, after a period of travel in North America and Europe (he made Robert Browning's acquaintance in Italy). He became a journalist, civil servant and politician, returning to England in 1872, where he resumed the literary life he had been involved in before going to New Zealand. The biography includes extensive comment on Domett's verse and on his relations with Browning and other literary figures. The copy held is a carbon type-script with annotations by Horace Fildes, including several lengthy comments and corrections of various errors. It is not known whether the top copy of the typescript still exists. Text copied to NRAM B157

Sharp remained in Wellington, where he died on 5 July 1880, after a career which included a period as acting harbourmaster. The journal covers the period from 4 October 1837 to 4 December 1838, during which time he commanded several ships - the 'Emily', 'Clive' and 'Tigris' - sailing chiefly in the Persian Gulf. He includes coloured sketches of two forts on the Persian Gulf and uses part of the volume for calculations of his daily position.

Sir Frederick Young, afterwards President of the Colonial Institute, was the second son of William's brother. Coming to Nelson on the 'Mary Anne' in early 1842, William was for a short time the New Zealand Company agent in Nelson. On 14 August 1842 he was drowned while crossing the Wairau River. His mother, Mary Young transcribed his letters as a memorial, together with notes, extracts from her journal, and a number of related documents, including letters and obituaries of his death. The letters were transcribed into two volumes but only one is held. It contains chiefly the account of his voyage to, and his experiences in, New Zealand.
